What is the PAL score?
PAL stands for Physical Activity Level. The PAL score is comparable to the MET score. The difference is that it does not give an indication for 1 specific activity, but for all activities throughout the entire day.
The PAL score is calculated by dividing the total daily energy expenditure by the basal metabolic rate. A PAL score of 2 means that someone's total daily energy expenditure is twice as high as their basal metabolic rate.
We distinguish different levels:
| Lifestyle | Example | PAL |
|---|---|---|
| Inactief | You are bedridden or disabled | 1,2 |
| Little active | Desk work without any physical effort | 1.4 |
| Light active | Sedentary work with occasional travel | 1.6 |
| Active | Upright work with movements | 1.8 |
| Very active | You do physical work, you are on the move all the time | 2.0 |
| Extremely active | You do very physically demanding work | 2,2 |
