What Is Your BMI? How Do You Calculate It? And Is It Important?

You have probably heard the term BMI mentioned. But what exactly is it? How can you calculate it? And is it really that important?

What is BMI?

BMI stands for Body Mass Index and is a measure of the ratio between your weight and height.

How do I calculate my BMI?

To calculate your own BMI, you divide your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres.

BMI = your body weight in kg / (your height in metres x your height in metres)

Example for someone weighing 60kg and 1.65m tall: 60 / (1.65 x 1.65) = 22.04

What is a healthy BMI?

For adults a healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 25.

BMI
< 18.5 Underweight
18.5 - 25 Healthy weight
25 - 30 Overweight
> 30 Obesity

Calculating BMI is increasingly less used to indicate whether someone is under- or overweight. Because it is calculated with only 2 variables (your weight and height), it can give a distorted picture. Someone with a lot of muscle mass can easily end up in the overweight category.

That is why the waist circumference is increasingly also being looked at.
