What is BMI?
BMI stands for Body Mass Index and is a measure of the ratio between your weight and height.
How do I calculate my BMI?
To calculate your own BMI, you divide your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres.
BMI = your body weight in kg / (your height in metres x your height in metres)
Example for someone weighing 60kg and 1.65m tall: 60 / (1.65 x 1.65) = 22.04
What is a healthy BMI?
For adults a healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 25.
| BMI | |
|---|---|
| < 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 - 25 | Healthy weight |
| 25 - 30 | Overweight |
| > 30 | Obesity |
Calculating BMI is increasingly less used to indicate whether someone is under- or overweight. Because it is calculated with only 2 variables (your weight and height), it can give a distorted picture. Someone with a lot of muscle mass can easily end up in the overweight category.
That is why the waist circumference is increasingly also being looked at.
