Why is sufficient exercise important?
Sufficient exercise has many advantages:
- A stronger heart
- Stronger blood vessels
- Greater lung capacity
- Fitter feeling
- Better weight control
- Better fitness
- More energy due to the release of dopamine
- More power
- More endurance
- Supple and stronger muscles and joints
- Better cholesterol levels
- Less adverse effect of unhealthy behavior, such as smoking and excessive drinking
- Better resistance => less likely to get sick
- More resilience, also mentally
- Less sadness, anxiety and tension
- More self-confidence
- Sleep better
- Increased alertness
- Preventing osteoporosis
- Slowing down the mental aging process
What is sufficient exercise?
In Belgiumë we have 3 standards for exercise.
The exercise standard
Advice: exercise every day for 30 minutes (adults) or 60 minutes (young people and children) at a moderate intensity.
Activities of moderate intensity: walking, cycling at leisure, gardening, cleaning, taking the stairs...
The step standard
Advice: take 10,000 (for people over 65: 8,000) steps every day
For activities where you cannot count steps, you may count 1500 steps per 10 minutes that you move at moderate intensity.
The fitness standard
Advice: 20-30 minutes of high-intensity exercise 3 times a week
High intensity activities: sports or other activities that make you sweat
